At the Sarentino Valley you find varied hiking trails on all levels. Unhuried walkers get their money's worth as well as ambitioned passionate hikers. Down in the valley there are easy and contemplative excursions possible for example the valley loop road. On the heights perfectly labeled hiking trails lead to rustic mountain huts, original alps or to one of the 140 peaks.
Enclosed find a selection of the most beautiful hiking destinations:
- Stoney Men: This legendary ridge high above Sarentino is one of the most beautiful vista points of the Sarentino Alps. In Medieval times it is said that witches' dances and devil's celebrations were held here. Around this mystic place with its over six-foot high pyramids built of piled stone sheets a lot of legends entwine. 500 years later you still can feel the magic of this place.
- Latzfons Cross (2.305 m): Santa Croce di Lazfons mountain shelter is near Europe’s highest altitude pilgrimage church, in the eastern Sarentino Alps. The mountain shelter has a panoramic view of the Dolomites that makes it unique. The little church, dedicated to the Lazfons Cross, was built in 1868 on the site of an earlier chapel and is the highest altitude church of pilgrimage in Europe. In summer, the church hosts the Schwarzen Herrgott, or Black God, a highly venerated crucifix that offers protection from storms. Every year in the early summer, a solemn processi accompanies the crucifix up to the church from the village of Latzfons, and brings it back down in the fall.
- Lake of Valdurna: The lake of Valdurna is a small mountain lake at the end of the Valdurna valley. It was supposedly formed by a landslide at the northwest side of the valley. The Valdurna brook was ponded by this. The picturesque village of Valdurna is directly situated at the lake and it is surrounded by the proud peaks of the Sarentino Alps. Here you can find many starting points for hiking trails.
Gregor's tip: "Once a week I go on a hiking tour to my most powerful places with the guests. Besides a visit of my favourite huts I tell you insider stories about the valley."
